Wilson Pediatric Therapy LLC is proud to announce that its' providers are now able to continue seeing certain clients past 3 years old! We are calling these services Second Steps, because it is the necessary "second step" after KY First Steps' interventions. Kentucky First Steps discontinues services once a child turns the age of 3 regardless of the child's need. Now WPT providers are able, in some instances, to continue providing the same level of services to the family.

For years I heard professionals give reasons for why they would never "go private" and at the top of the list was always the liability. Alas, I to fell pray to this fear for many years saying to myself and to others "I'd never go private, too much of a liability". However, Kresta does not live by fear or by empty words of others and she went private. Thanks to her unwillingness to follow the status quo we're here to say that God invented a wonderful way to control for liability: professional liability insurance! Sometimes as professionals we make errors and other times it's just a crazy parent claiming we have, either way you can take simple steps to protect yourself.

1. Hire Wilson Pediatric Therapy- we'll scan for errors as we key your billing and back up your data to prove your case. It is our goal to aid you in becoming the best service provider that you can be; when you do better, we do better!

2. Supervision- If you are a new therapist it may be required for you have a time of supervision in your practice, but if not it is always a good idea to have a more experience professional in your field to get advice from. A little Q & A helps everyone!

3. Professional Liability Insurance- we think you'll find that professional liability insurance is very affordable for the work you'll be doing, and it's coverage more than adequate.

Kresta Wilson, M.S. CCC-SLP- (University of Kentucky '99-'05) Since I began my career as a speech-language pathologist with Kentucky's Early Intervention Program, First Steps, and have never doubted my choice. First Steps delivers the services I believe in to a population my heart loves, not to mention the flexibility that my family needs. As time has passed, I have slowly but surely increased my independence in practice and now I'm trying to recruit others to work with me in this field. I want to help young therapists begin their careers in a strong way and provide them with a high quality service that they will value throughout their time with First Steps.

Joshua Wilson, MSW-CSW- (University of Kentucky '99-'03, '05-'08) I first began my social work career with adults challenged by mental retardation & developmental disabilities. This work was very tough, but it was used by God to give me a greater appreciation for life, family, and my abilities. I later began working with severely emotionally disabled children & their families first as a case manager and now as an in-home therapist. God has given me a big heart for children, my wife would say I act like one! As an in-home therapist, I have come to realize the value of treatment in the most natural environment. First Steps does it's work in the home and childcare settings of the client because those are the places children learn best. Wilson Pediatric Therapy (WPT) provides support for professionals who independently contract with KY First Steps through practice enhancement, billing, and data management. WPT does not hire the therapist, the therapist hires WPT! Our therapists are independently contracted with first steps through our provider number (Subcontracted). So, if you were to sign a contract with us you would be your own boss and we would help you develop your practice, do your billing, and manage your client data. There is a $250 startup deposit available to therapists at each signing. This money is subtracted from their WPT Perks reimbursement. In other words, this is a forward of their own money leaving $1,400 at year end.

.25 Cents Per Recruit

Every time you recruit a therapist for WPT we will give you a raise! Your raise is added to every unit you bill.

EXAMPLE: If you recruit 2 therapists, when you bill 1 hour (4 units) you'll earn $71 instead of $69

And you’ll keep your increase as long as you stay with WPT!

First Steps: Kentucky’s Early Intervention System

What Is First Steps?
First Steps is a statewide early intervention system that provides services to children with developmental disabilities from birth to age 3 and their families. First Steps is Kentucky's response to the federal Infant-Toddler Program. First Steps offers comprehensive services through a variety of community agencies and service disciplines and is administered by the Department for Public Health in the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

Why Provide Services?
Typically, children who participate in early intervention experience significant improvement in development and learning. Children with developmental delays or conditions likely to cause delays benefit greatly from First Step services during critical developmental years.

Services and support also benefit families by reducing stress.

Early intervention services can decrease the need for costly special education programs later in life by remedying problems early in the child's development.

Who Does First Steps Serve?
First Steps serves children from birth to age 3 and their families. Child eligibility for the program is determined two ways:

1. By developmental delay - A child may be eligible for services if an evaluation shows that a child is not developing typically in at least one of the following skill areas: communication, cognition, physical, social and emotional or self-help.

2. Automatic entry - A child may be eligible if he or she receives a diagnosis of physical or mental condition with high probability of resulting developmental delay, such as Down Syndrome.

How are services provided?
First Steps is available in all Kentucky counties. Services may be provided in the home, at child development or other designated centers or in a clinical setting, depending on the needs of the child and family and the availability of services in a given area.

How Can I Learn More About First Steps Services?
Anyone can refer a child for First Steps services by calling (800) 442-0087.
Referrals are directed to teams at the district point of entry offices that help children and families access needed services. Services are available to any child and family who meet developmental eligibility criteria, regardless of income. A family's participation in First Steps services is always voluntary.

Enrollment Procedures for Becoming a First Steps Service Provider
A new provider is defined as:
* An independent provider or entity/agency consisting of one or more providers that does not have a current contract and provider number; or The personnel who will be providing services under a new contract/ provider number (i.e. Wilson Pediatric Therapy); or
* A provider who is currently working under another provider entity’s provider number and wants to provide services under his/her own provider number; or
* A former First Steps provider who is not covered under a current contract and does not have a valid CBIS provider number.

Step 1: Review the service provider list and the qualifications for being approved as a Service Provider. You must meet highest entry level requirements for one of the following professions. If you are unsure if you meet the qualifications contact Jackie Neal at Jackie.Neal@ky.gov. Failure to meet qualifications will result in completion of on-line training but failure to qualify for attendance at the face-to-face orientation. Step 2: Register for online Service Provider Training

Step 3: Contact Wilson Pediatric Therapy so that we know where you are in the process and give you our service provider number. You will need to know this information when you go for the face-to-face orientation.

Step 4: First Steps Face-to-Face Orientation

Once you have successfully completed the on-line orientation you will be able to register for face-to-face orientation provided by a First Steps Technical Assistance Team in your area.

Estimated Income Taxes

Your Income Taxes

(rule #1: Don't Freak Out!)

Estimated tax is the method used to pay tax on income that is not subject to withholding. This includes income from self-employment, interest, dividends, alimony, rent, gains from the sale of assets, prizes and awards. You also may have to pay estimated tax if the amount of income tax being withheld from your salary, pension, or other income is not enough.

Estimated tax is used to pay both income tax and self-employment tax, as well as other taxes and amounts reported on your tax return. If you do not pay enough through withholding or estimated tax payments, you may be charged a penalty. If you do not pay enough by the due date of each payment period you may be charged a penalty even if you are due a refund when you file your tax return.

Who Must Pay Estimated Tax?
People or businesses who do not have tax withholdings via W-4 and will owe the government over $1000 in taxes in a year must pay quarterly estimated taxes.

How To Figure Estimated Tax?
To figure your estimated tax, you must figure your expected adjusted gross income, taxable income, taxes, deductions, and credits for the year.

1. When figuring your estimated tax, it may be helpful to use your income, deductions, and credits for the pervious year as a starting point. Use your previous year's federal tax return as a guide.

2. You can use the worksheet in Form 1040-ES (PDF) to figure your federal estimated tax. If you estimated your earnings too high, simply complete another Form 1040-ES worksheet to refigure your estimated tax for the next quarter. If you estimated your earnings too low, again complete another Form 1040-ES worksheet to recalculate your estimated taxes for the next quarter. You want to estimate your income as close as you can to avoid penalties.

3. You can use the worksheet in form 42A740-S4 (PDF) to figure your state estimated tax.

You must make adjustments both for changes in your own situation and for recent changes in the tax law.

When To Pay Estimated Taxes?
For estimated tax purposes, the year is divided into four payment periods. Each period has a specific payment due date. If you do not pay enough tax by the due date of each of the payment periods, you may be charged a penalty even if you are due a refund when you file your income tax return.

Quarter 1 due- April 15

Quarter 2 due- June 15

Quarter 3 due- September 15

Quarter 4 due- January 15 (of the following year)

Electronic Federal Tax Payment System vs Postal Voucher Payment System?
Using the EFTPS system is the easiest way to pay your federal taxes for individuals as well as businesses. Make ALL of your federal tax payments including federal tax deposits (FTDs), installment agreement and estimated tax payments using Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). If it is easier to pay your estimated taxes weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc. you can, as long as you have paid enough in by the end of the quarter. Using EFTPS, you can access a history of your payments, so you know how much and when you made your estimated tax payments. Or you can use the traditional postal voucher payment system that comes with the 1040 ES. You physically mail these vouchers in with a check for your tax payment.

State postal voucher payment system?

Like federal taxes, you may choose to pay your quarterly estimated taxes online electronically or via the postal voucher system. For Kentucky's vouchers Click Here . Right now there is no electronic system in place for state estimated tax payments.

City & School Taxes?

If you bill client time in a city the money you earn is subject to city & school taxes. Every location is different, but you should take the time to contact the proper authorities (urban county gov & school board) to find out. These taxes are generally pretty low, but important to pay none the less. You will pay these taxes after filing Federal and State for the year. In some major cities they allow you to make quarterly estimated payments through a voucher system just like state & federal.
